Celebratory march in Canada depicting Indira Gandhi's assassination: Congress condemns

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that a procession depicting the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at an event in Canada was shameful. In this regard, he also insisted that Foreign Minister Jai Shankar should convey the condemnation to the Canadian embassy officials.

Video Show: A video showing the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been shared on social media. According to reports, the procession was held by Khalistan supporters in Brampton, Canada on June 4, two days before the 39th anniversary of Operation Blue Star on June 6. It featured images of Indira Gandhi being shot dead by her bodyguards. It also had the slogan “Revenge for Sri Darbar Sahib Attack” on it.

Reprehensible: Congress leader Malinda Deora, who shared the video on her Twitter page, said, “As an Indian, I was appalled to see this 5 km procession in Brampton, Canada depicting the assassination of Indira Gandhi. This is not just about one side. It is about the value of a country’s history. “It is about the pain caused by the assassination of its Prime Minister. This transgression deserves the condemnation of the world.”

Shameful: One of the senior Congress leaders and general secretary of the party’s media wing, Jairam Ramesh Deora, re-shared this tweet. In it, he said, “I fully agree with this. It is very shameful. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar should convey India’s condemnation to the Canadian authorities in this regard.”

Earlier, a note was sent to Canada’s Department of International Affairs through the Embassy of India in Ottawa on Wednesday expressing displeasure over the presence of the controversial figurines.

In this situation, Canada’s ambassador to India in New Delhi, Cameron Mackie, has expressed his regret. He said, “I was appalled to learn that the assassination of the late former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was celebrated at an event in Canada. Canada is no place for such hate and sanctification of violence. I strongly condemn these actions.”
