Madurai: For the past 25 years, an elderly couple from Madurai has been making it their duty to relieve the hunger of animals and birds.
Ku.Sankara Narayanan (74) hails from Madurai Three Mavadi and retired after working in a private company. His wife is Jaya Letsumi (68). Retired from government aided school. Both have been feeding the homeless for the past 25 years. They are doing this work daily considering it as their divine duty to give prey to crows and sparrows.
Regarding this Sankaranarayanan said: My hometown is Cholavandan in Madurai district. I moved to Thrummavadi in 1989 when there were fields and trees in the area. Thus, monkeys were seen in large numbers in circulation. Let’s give fruits to the monkeys. Cattle breeder in every house. Goats and cows raised in this way will visit our house on their way to pasture. When that happens, we will give bran and punna as prey. My wife Jayaletsumi has been very supportive.
For about 25 years till date we have been committed to feeding cattle continuously. We call every cow that comes to our house by different names. That is Letsumi, Triji, White Black, Hornless, Black, White
Even when we call them by name, they come and stand before us. Cows come to Punna for water 20 to 30 times a day. We consider giving prey to homeless creatures as divine service, he said.
About this, his wife Jayalakshmi said that in the morning we would give prey to crows and sparrows on the floor of the house. In the afternoon and evening we put water in vessels to quench thirst. Sometimes watching crows and sparrows bathe in drinking water is blissful. My husband is also involved in it so I am doing my best in his way.
Neighbors would tell us that on days when we were out, cows would come and wait in front of the house for prey. When you hear it, it will be difficult for your heart. Each cow eats differently. Some cows drink only water. Some cows will eat only if Punna is mixed with it. We will give home grown vegetables, banana stem and banana pods. We find satisfaction in this. The son in Bengaluru also helps us in this service from time to time, he said.
