Madurai: The State Highways Department has expedited the construction of a high level bridge from Madurai Periyar Station to Yanaikal. It has been reported that the preliminary works are going to be started soon while the land acquisition works have been completed.
The road leading from Periyar bus stand in Madurai city to Mattuthavani through Simmakkal, Yanyakkal, Koripalayam, Tallakulam is a very busy road. It is through this road that lakhs of motorists and people travel to the north and south city areas of Madurai every day.
Therefore, city buses, autos, cars and two-wheelers are busy on this road from morning to evening. It is on this road that the city’s major shopping malls, tourist spots, colleges, schools, government offices, private offices, markets, etc. Currently, a high-level flyover is being constructed on this road from Tallakulam to Koripalayam to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
As soon as the funds are allocated, the work will be started soon after the tender is completed. In continuation of this bridge, a new high-level bridge is being constructed from Yaanikal to Periyar bus stand via Simmakkal, after the AV flyover. Since the last AIADMK regime, the land acquisition work for this new bridge has started. However, it was shelved for some time due to various objections. So, will this high-rise bridge come as planned? Won’t you come? Many questions arose.
The state highway department has decided that a high-level bridge is necessary to reduce traffic congestion in Madurai city. Therefore, the work on the Yanyakal-Periyar bus station high-level bridge has started to speed up again.
In response to a question raised by Saravanakumaran from Madurai in the Right to Information Act, Public Works Department Construction and Maintenance Drafting Engineer Chandran said, “The land acquisition work for the high-level bridge from Periyar bus station to Yaanikal is nearing completion. The design work for the bridge is in progress.”
An official of the Highways Department said, “The bridge from Yaanikal to Periyar bus station is also planned to be completed along with the Koripalayam bridge work. That is why the land acquisition work has been expedited,” he said.
