Trouble in getting Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu - Krishnarajasagar dam water level reduced

Bangalore: As the water level of Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dam has dropped to 77 feet, there is a problem in releasing the Cauvery water which is supposed to be supplied to Tamil Nadu.

Due to delayed southwest monsoon rains in Karnataka this year, districts including Kodagu, Shimoga and Mysuru are dry. Due to the lack of rainfall in the Cauvery catchment areas, the flow of water into the Cauvery river has completely decreased.

As a result, the water level of the Krishnarajasagar dam built across the Cauvery in Srirangapatna, Mandya district has decreased drastically. As of 7 pm yesterday, the water level of the 124.80 feet high Krishnarajasagar dam has dropped to 77.68 feet. Only 500 cubic feet of water per second is coming to the dam. The Cauvery Irrigation Corporation said that the water outlet from the dam has been completely closed due to this.

As the water level of the Krishnarajasagar dam has dropped to 77 feet, there has been a problem in supplying Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. According to the final order of the Cauvery Tribunal, there is also a problem in the availability of water to be provided to Tamil Nadu in June. Due to this, there is a risk of a problem arising in the issue of river water distribution between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Cauvery Irrigation Corporation officials say, “Last year on the same day, the water level of the dam was 106 feet. This year it is only 77 feet. The opening of canals for irrigation of Mysuru and Mandya farmers is completely closed. If the water level of the dam falls below 74 feet, there will be a problem in supplying drinking water to the cities of Bengaluru and Mysuru.
