"Yoga belongs to all mankind" - Sadhguru's keynote speech at UNESCO event

Paris: On the occasion of the 9th International Day of Yoga, Sadhguru delivered a keynote address on the topic ‘Let’s Create a Conscious World’ at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France on June 21.

Speaking then, he said, “We can all be proud of the fact that yoga originated in India. But, everyone needs to understand one thing well. I know some overly patriotic people will disagree with my point. But let me tell you, Yoga is not only for our country. It belongs to all mankind.

If we discover something new we can attribute it to a particular group of people. But if you see and feel the existing truth, it is not yours or mine. Every human being who wants to be perfect has that right.

International Yoga Day is not a day of celebration. It is a day of commitment. It is a day when you make a commitment to be at your best physically and mentally and contribute to this world.” said.

Following Sadhguru’s keynote speech, UNESCO Artist for Peace Dr. Guila Clara Gezas had a discussion with Sadhguru.

In response to his question regarding the need for yoga for humanity, Satguru said, “In the comfortable nation of America, medical professionals say that one out of every two Americans is languishing in solitude. How is it right for them to languish in isolation with a world population of 8.4 billion?

This is because everyone builds a unique wall around themselves. They are stuck in isolation because they are unable to come out of the wall they have created for their self-protection. Walls like these that you build for self-protection today will become your personal prison tomorrow.

Loneliness is the first sign of mental illness. Hence, the need of yoga is very much needed now. Yoga means union. There is no room for talk of isolation.”

And “All the harm that human beings experience comes only through either the body or the mind. So create a little space between you and these two. If you do that, there will be no harm in your life.”

To bring this to life experientially, Sadhguru imparted to the participants a simple yoga practice called ‘Isha Kriya’.

UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay, Permanent Representative and Ambassador Vishal Sharma spoke at the event held at UNESCO. Also, more than 1,500 people participated as representatives from different countries including Palestine, Czech Republic, Morocco, Peru and Romania.
