Rs 9.97 Crore Sewage Treatment Plant - Cleansing Vaigai River in Manamadurai

Manamadurai: A treatment plant is being set up at a cost of Rs 9.97 crore to prevent sewage from mixing in the Vaigai river at Manamadurai in Sivagangai district.

In 27 wards of Manamadurai municipality, all sewage from residential and commercial establishments is discharged into Vaigai river. Due to this, the river was completely polluted and the groundwater level was affected. There was a constant demand to stop this.

Subsequently, sewage treatment is being set up at a cost of Rs 9.97 crore under the Clean India Movement 2.0 project on behalf of the municipality to prevent the mixing of sewage in the river. For this, Bhoomi Puja was held near Sonaiya Temple yesterday. Minister of Cooperatives Periyagaruppan, MLA Tamilarasi, Municipal Chairman Mariyappan Kennedy, District Revenue Manivannan, Municipal Commissioner Kannan, Deputy Chairman Balasundhar, Municipal Chairman Sengaimaaran, Union President Latha Annathurai and others were present.

Municipal Chairman Mariyappan Kennedy said: 8.5 km of main pipes will be installed to carry sewage from the city. Also, waste water collection tanks will be constructed at 6 places namely Agraharam Road, Thayamangalam Road, Sonaiya Temple, Alaghar Temple Road, Mathuranagar Road, Kannar Street Road.

The entire waste water collected here will be transported to the 20 lakh liter treatment plant located at Mankulam landfill, 2.2 km away. The treated water is then used for agriculture and the waste is used as fertilizer. The scheme will be operational within one year. This is what he said.
