The government administration planned to build a residence here and expand the city. At that time, the Coimbatore Housing Board had acquired about 280 acres of land in the foothills near Sundakamuthur from various departments for residential purposes for retired soldiers.

Subsequently, on 19 June 1964, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Kamaraj, initiated the project of establishing a residential area in Govaiputhur. An inscription commemorating this is also present in the Coimbatore area. Coimbatore, which was then seen with hundreds of houses, has today become an unmissable landmark in the city.

The area is spread over approximately 3,500 acres. More than 3 thousand houses were built here by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. Tamil Nadu Special Police Force in 1972, Post Office in 1974, Telecommunication Service in 1986 and Separate Electricity Board Office in 1981 were started in one part of Coimbatore. In 1976, a funnel-shaped overhead reservoir for drinking water was constructed. It has been 59 years since the city of Coimbatore started, he said.

President of Coimbatore Residents’ Association V. Rajaiah said, “We decided to celebrate the foundation stone day of former Chief Minister Kamaraj as Coimbatore Day. Earlier there was Coimbatore Housing Unit here. Later, many areas like Siruvani Nagar, Alamu Nagar, Bharti Nagar were formed.

Coimbatore was created as a planned city. Along with the Coimbatore Residents’ Association, more than 30 residents’ associations and traders’ associations here are celebrating the Coimbatore Foundation Day this year. On the occasion of Coimbatore Foundation Day, various programs have been organized by the Coimbatore Residents’ Welfare Association.

Yesterday (Saturday) and today (Sunday) 2 days series of programs are being conducted. Marathon competition, 20 km cycle competition, athletics competition, painting competition and art programs are being held on the occasion of Coimbatore Day, he said.
