
Imphal: Riots broke out in many places in Manipur last night. The security forces chased them away and conducted a flag march.
Manipur’s majority Maithei tribe clashed last month with the Kuki and Naga tribes over their demand for status.
Security forces are involved in the operation to contain the violence, where violence continues.
The sound of automatic firing was heard till early morning yesterday in Kangwai area of Sursandpur district in Kwakta, Vishnupur district of Manipur. At many places, rioters gathered and engaged in arson.
A thousand-strong mob tried to set fire to the palace complex near the Advance Hospital. They were dispersed by the action forces who fired teargas shells and rubber bullets. 2 people were injured.
300 people gathered at Thongju near Manipur University and tried to set fire to the house of the local MLA. There, the action forces quickly chased away the violent people.
A mob attacked the Iringbham police station in Imphal West district and tried to take away guns from the armory there. The task forces also came and chased them away.
A mob of 300 people surrounded the BJP office at Sinjemai last night. The soldiers rushed there and chased them away. BJP state president Saradadevi’s house is in Imphal West. A gang tried to set the house on fire. The task force chased them away.
Meanwhile, “If Manipur is a part of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have expressed his concern about the ongoing violence there,” said former Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh.
