New Delhi: “We should not forget the 25th of June. It was on this day that Emergency was declared in our nation. It is a black chapter in the history of India,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi said this while speaking at the 102nd Voice of Mind program.
Speaking on the Voice of Mind program today, Prime Minister Modi said, “India is the mother of democracy. Because we hold the ideals of our democratic system as paramount and our Constitution as paramount,
Let us not forget the 25th of June. Emergency was declared in our nation on this day. It is a dark chapter in the history of India. Millions resisted this emergency with all their might. Even today it is mind-boggling to think how much cruelty, injustice and torture were unleashed on the supporters of democracy during this period and how much suffering they had to endure.
Many books have been written on the administration and the police who unleashed these atrocities. It was during this period that I got an opportunity to write a book called Shankarsh Man Gujarat, which means Gujarat in struggle.
A few days ago I came across another book written on emergency. Its title is Torture of Political Prisoners in India. This book, which came out during the Emergency, describes in detail how the government of that time treated the defenders of democracy with cruelty.
This book has many subject studies and lots of pictures. As we celebrate the nectar of freedom today, we must take a look back at such crimes that endangered the very freedom of the nation.
Through this, it will be easy for today’s younger generation to understand the greatness of democracy and its importance.”
