Imphal: An army soldier was injured in a sudden firing by unidentified assailants in Singmang village area of Manipur capital Imphal on Sunday night. The army said that additional forces have been mobilized in the area where the incident took place and a search operation is being conducted.
On May 3, a fierce conflict broke out between the Maithei community and the opposing Kuki and Naga communities in Manipur over inclusion of the Maithei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST). More than 100 people have been killed so far in the month-long conflict.
The law and order situation in Manipur has been affected by the ongoing fighting between various ethnic groups for the past one month. Politicians’ houses were set on fire. The army is working day and night to control the riots.
It is also reported that more than 35 relief camps have been set up to accommodate the displaced people. The violence in Manipur has created a very sad atmosphere. Many people who have lost their homes have fled their residences and taken refuge in relief camps for safety. The state government is committed to provide all the facilities to them within two months, said Chief Minister Bran Singh.
He further said, “I visited some relief camps. People could be seen suffering there. The government has made all efforts to provide them with the necessary facilities. The government has decided to build 3,000-4,000 temporary houses for those staying in the relief camps until peace returns to the state. The work will start soon. Action will be taken to shift the people in the relief camps to temporary houses within two months. All facilities will be provided to them there,” he said.
